Malaysia Expresses Concern Over Conflict In Syria In UN Open Debate

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 – The deteriorating humanitarian situation in conflicted Syria was among points raised by Malaysia at the United Nations (UN) open debate, touching also on the delivery of humanitarian assistance to those in need.

In presenting Malaysia’s view, Charge D’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Malaysia to the United Nations Raja Reza Raja Zaib Shah said the country was appalled over the number of civilian casualties, as a result of the conflict.

He said there must be an immediate end to the senseless killings and appalling human rights violations, especially against civilians.

The Malaysian delegation also called on other parties to the conflict to restrict themselves from employing heavy weapons and explosive munitions that inflicted untold misery, deaths and injuries to civilians.

“As with the authorities, the parties should also attend to the needs of the civilians and allow vital humanitarian access to reach them,” he said at the open debate of the Security Council on the protection of civilians in armedĀ  conflict, at the United Nations Headquaters in New York on Monday.
