KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 – Malaysia’s services sector saw its revenue grow by 9.6 per cent to RM383.5 billion in the second quarter of 2017 (2Q17) from the same quarter last year, said the Department of Statistics (DoS).
In a statement today, the DoS said the increase was mainly contributed by the professional and real estate agent segment, which rose 22.7 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) to RM8.4 billion.
“This was followed by the wholesale & retail trade, food & beverages and accommodation segment, which went up 9.6 per cent year-on-year to RM303.8 billion,” it said.
It said the information & communication and transport & storage segment improved 8.5 per cent y-o-y to RM57.1 billion, while the health, education and arts, entertainment & recreation segment was 7.5 per cent y-o-y higher at RM14.2 billion.
It added that in 2Q17, the total number of persons engaged in the services sector grew 3.4 per cent y-o-y to 3.6 million persons, while salaries & wages paid stood at RM23.2 billion, an increase of 5.4 per cent as compared with the previous year.
